I wrote to my lawyer asking when I would be able to return to the States and this was her response sent to me on Wednseday.

Hi Tara,

Unfortunately, there's no predicting how long this will take. It's in the government's hands now but once it's transferred to the NVC they should send us the appropriate paperwork to fill out and then we should get the paper pushing from our end. Once we send in the appropriate paperwork, a visa appointment should be scheduled at the US consulate in Australia. I'm guesstimating around 2 months from the time the NVC gets the file, but it can be more.

We will contact you as soon as they get the file to the NVC. Genevieve is following up with the NVC to confirm USCIS transferred your file. She will continue contacting them until we have confirmation that they have it.
